RF treatment

RF - Radio Frequency Treatment

RF is a high frequency electrical current applied to the tissue resulting in temperature elevation.  Heating of the eyelids softens the oils obstructing the glands.  Both the upper and lower lids of both eyes will be treated.

How is RF treatment performed

Ultrasound gel is applied to the upper and lower lids.  The eyelids are then heated for about 10 minutes per eye.  There is no need to wear any eye shields during this procedure.

"RF / IPL COMBO" Treatment is the recommended form of treatment assuming you qualify for the combined treatment. Each form of treatment are effective seperately as well.

IPL - Intense Pulse Light

Intense Pulsed Light is a procedure where light is emitted from a flash lamp and delivered to the skin surrounding your eyes.  The energy from the light is absorbed by the blood vessels that supply the eyes and reduces the inflammation in the eyelids. It’s the inflammation that causes Dry Eyes.  The energy from the IPL also softens the thickened oil and allows the glands the release the oils more easily.

The light in this treatment can relieve inflammation in the blood vessels within the eye and help melt oil blockages in the meibomian glands so the oil can flow freely and help tears last longer.

How is IPL treatment performed

A layer of ultrasound gel is applied to the skin of the area to be treated. Usually this is on the cheeks below the eyes, and over the nose.  Eye pads or laser-grade metal eye shields are worn to protect the eyes during treatment. Some people might experience mild discomfort from the flashes of bright light, there is no risk of damaging the eyes while wearing these shields or pads during IPL treatment.

What happens after my IPL and RF treatments?

treat dry eyes

Following one or both treatments the doctor will do a meibomian gland expression.  Anesthetic drops are used to numb the eyes.  Special forceps are used the squeeze out the thickened oil allowing new oil to come to the surface.  Some patients may experience some discomfort during this procedure.

Following the treatment, you might experience mild redness and swelling.  Skin cooling is not recommended; you may apply make-up and moisturizers immediately following the treatment.

It takes 4 treatments to get the full effect/best results. Each treatment session takes about 15-20 minutes and are done 2-4 weeks apart.

We’ll review your progress 3 months after the 4th treatment.

It’s rare for someone to need another treatment at this stage, and we don’t charge for this should it be needed.

Usually, the ongoing maintenance program is to have a single treatment every 6 months. Longer breaks between treatments might require a second treatment 2-4 weeks later, so it’s best to follow the recommended treatment schedule.
